Legs on show in retro fashion

A flirty 1970s vibe featured in two of the early shows on day one of Australian Fashion Week, which officially started yesterday in Sydney.

The industry-only event that showcases spring-summer 2011-12 fashion collections to buyers, media and a handful of celebrities opened with Zimmermann's runway presentation.

At the Classic Throttle Shop, Zimmermann presented soft, floaty looks in a muted, innocent palette mixed up with the occasional floral print or pop of colour. 

Silhouette s were loose and flowing and there were plenty of lace details and origami-style folded embellishments. Garments featured big flashes of leg and cleavage and a relaxed attitude. The 1970s references were apparent in the maxi dresses, bell sleeves, jumpsuits and unfussy, beach-ready hair.

Bec & Bridge's show continued the retro feel, with more florals, body conscious clinging fabrics and wrap dresses. Some models wore pastel gangster-style hats the result of a collaboration with Australian hat makers Akubra and there were also high-waisted shorts and the occasional burst of burnt orange. Like at Zimmermann, there was plenty of leg on display. 

Gold lame gear such as a pussy bow blouse and a one-shouldered frock looked just right for gyrating about in Studio 54. A scanty mesh top, skirt and frock revealed plenty of skin.

''We were definitely inspired by Bianca Jagger and Lauren Hutton in the late 1970s,'' designers Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston said. ''They epitomise sensuality, success and a nonchalant sex appeal that is key to our brand.''

Alex Perry added a good dose of Hollywood glamour with his collection, which featured floor-skimming, red carpet gowns plus ladylike cocktail frocks in vivid primary hues contrasted with floral-printed black.

Supermodel Yasmin Le Bon will walk the runway for Little Joe Woman today.

Khadi fashion show steals hearts of one and all

A fashion show solely showcasing khadi cotton and silk textiles clothing stole the hearts of the khadi lovers in the city of Ahmedabad. The fashion show was hosted at the ‘Khadi Utsav’, an exhibition ofkhadi textiles and garments.

Ahmedabad is playing host to a month long ‘Khadi Utsav’ in which more than 273 stalls have been set up, displaying khadi products from across various states of India. The fair which began on March 6 will run till April 6, 2011.

The concept of khadi textiles is synonymous with the father of the nation – Mahatma Gandhi. Khadi textiles were the driving force which united India in the movement to secure independence and in order to achieve self reliance in textile fabrics.

Today khadi institutions are producing good quality fabrics and in turn providing economic independence to the lowest strata of society, who are involved in the spinning and weaving activities of producing khadi fabrics.

According to Mr Anupam Mazumdar – a well known textile designer and consultant and some one who has been closely associated with handloom weavers of khadi fabrics, “The biggest advantage of wearing khadi textiles is that it carries the lowest carbon footprint among all textiles, which makes it a sustainable fabric”.

Poznan Fashion Fair has come to an end

Poznan Fashion Fair which was held on 1-3 March 2011 in Poznan, Poland, finished off with the Final Ceremony. The new collections that were successful at the tradefairs are now conquering the fashion world and will be available in shops already in autumn. During the three Fair busy days the stalls of 510 exhibitors were visited by almost 6,300 professional visitors. All of them were unanimous: Poznan Fashion Fair is the most important fashion business centre in Poland.

Poznan Fashion Fair, which took place under the new name for the first time, attracted crowds. For three days its pavilions were visited by over 6,300 people, the vast majority being representatives of clothing, leather and textile industries. They had a chance to acquaint themselves with offers from four various trade show displays: NEXT SEASON Exhibition of Clothing, Lingerie and Accessories, FAST FASHION Exhibition, BTS Exhibition of Shoes, Leather and Leather Goods and TEX-STYLE Exhibition of Clothing Industry Fabrics and Accessories.

Next season’s trends were set by brands that were exhibited during spectacular and extremely popular trade shows. The Fair catwalk saw both classic and artistic designs of clothes for autumn-winter 2011/2012. Pavilion 9 displayed works of young designers. Under the FUTURE students and graduates of project artistic clothing design schools were able to present their fresh outlook towards the future of Polish fashion.

Sartorial details and dramatized Seventies proportions. Influenced by a vision of the Forties. The line drops down to the knee and flares. Stoles emphasize shoulders, tight on small masculine jacket with striking lapels and on coat with military detailing and a synched waist. Subtle feminine belts are accentuated with leather trims. Flowing, ethereal dresses give way to see-through effects and tie at the neck with long scarves. The masculine side returns with extra-wide pants, in lightweight nabuk or in exclusive British mélange fabrics. And the pant-skirt becomes a signature, paired with a caban and over-the-knee boots. Worn with black and white graphic prints. Polka dots, geometric prints, light pied de poule. For an incognito get away.
